Top Rated Centrifugal Juicers
These are the most common types in homes.
Centrifugal models are more likely to be found in the kitchens of people who juice regularly, but aren’t purists.
Centrifugal models are the most affordable type of motorized version, costing between $50 and $400 for most models.
We love them because they’re the most user-friendly, and require the least prep work and elbow grease. They’re faster and more convenient than masticating or triturating models.
Centrifugal machines are the best choice for people who need to juice lots of produce without setting aside an hour or more!
Centrifugal models work on a central feed chute design, with a spinning juicing assembly in the middle.
Generally speaking, there’s a cutting blade/pulp basket combined in one juicing disc. A centrifugal machine zips up all your produce, and then spins the chopped pulp in the basket to draw juice out. Centrifugal force draws juice to the edges of the assembly, where it pours out into your glass.
The Multi-Speed is our most versatile centrifugal recommendation for beginners.
We like it because it has multiple juicing settings for different types of produce. This makes it the perfect choice for someone who wants to try lots of new combinations and variations in their juicing!

Best Slow / Masticating Juicers
Masticating “slow” juicing machines are all the rage now with the cold-pressed juice revolution.
They offer better nutritional content in their juice, thanks to slow motors that don’t introduce heat or oxygen into the juice. They also give you much better yield, since juice is wrung out of produce rather than spun out in a centrifugal system.
We love masticating models for their efficiency: they usually get 1/3 more juice over centrifugal models! They’re also more effective for juicing greens and tricky roots like ginger. This efficiency can save you lots of money in the long run!
Masticating versions work on a “pressing” system, while centrifugal versions mash and cut produce. There aren’t usually any blades on a masticating machine. Instead, there’s an auger which turns slowly, crushing produce against a pulp screen.
The augers also have ridges and in some cases teeth to help them gnaw into tougher produce. In some models, there’s a secondary pressing stage which helps squeeze out every last drop of juice from pulp before it’s ejected.
One of our favorite masticating models for people new to juicing is the Champion.

It’s a good starter machine because it’s virtually indestructible! As a beginner, you’re probably not going to have all the finesse or technique in the world. That’s why you’ll want a solid machine that can handle the learning curve.

Of course, both masticating and centrifugal versions have their inherent weak spots.
Centrifugal machines struggle with greens and citrus, and leave pulp fairly wet. Likewise, masticating machines take a lot of prep work, time, and energy. They can be slow and painstaking to use.
That’s why we love newer crossover or hybrid models, which combine the best aspects of both types!
Our favorite is this KitchenAid.
It’s a vertical masticating model with a cutting blade attached to the auger. That means you don’t have to do nearly the same amount of prep work as you’d have to with an ordinary masticating machine, but you’ll still get the same high yield in the end!
The modified auger design also includes two types of juicing edges, with a tapered design which pulls produce through. Remember that with most masticating versions, you have to force produce into the auger chamber with elbow grease.

If you’re looking for the ultimate in nutrition and efficiency, a triturating juicer is your best bet!
These machines expand on the platform of a masticating machine by adding a second auger. These augers fit closely together to more fully gnaw into produce.
The grooves and teeth on triturating models make them superior at eating greens, and breaking down tough leaves and stems. They’re also better at breaking down plant pulp.
They produce juice which is richer and fuller in texture, leaving only the driest fibers behind!
The stainless steel augers on triturating machines also hold up better over time, since they won’t chip or warp like plastic augers.
Of course, these machines are probably somewhat cost-prohibitive for some people who are new to juicing, at $500+.
However, their versatility makes them a good choice for people who are new to juicing, but who already make lots of homemade food products, like nut butters, sauces, and flours.
A triturating model is also very cost-effective in the long term, since you’ll have virtually no wasted produce!
Our favorite triturating juicer for newcomers is the Green Star.
While there are higher-end triturating models on the market, the Green Star has most of the same features for half the price!

Top Handheld Juice Extractors
Handheld juicers are your best bet for juicing wheatgrass.
They make excellent travel juicers for nutrition-conscious travelers, since they’re packable and don’t require electricity or much counter space.
Lots of handheld juicers are available for under $50, but we wouldn’t recommend them for juicing seriously. They’re a good choice for dipping your toes into the world of juicing, but they’re mostly cheap plastic models which won’t hold up over time.
Also, the pressure you need to juice wheatgrass can crack a plastic juicer in no time. We’re going to focus instead on handheld juicers for people who already know they want to juice for a long time, as well as people who are getting into juicing specifically to drink wheatgrass.
Our favorite handheld juicer is the Hurricane.
It’s made almost entirely from stainless steel, which won’t rust, corrode, crack, or warp. That’s build quality that you’d have to spend more than $1,000 on for a motorized model!
The Hurricane has also been specifically designed for juicing wheatgrass. Its cone-shaped auger and screens setup are prepared to handle the intense pressure needed for squeezing juice out of wheatgrass.
Previous buyers wrote that the Hurricane juices wheatgrass more efficiently than any motorized system they had used! That’s especially important, given the price of wheatgrass.
While the Hurricane seems like an old fashioned device, it does have a few smart features which help it fit into the modern world a little more easily.
There are rubber pads on the gripper feet, for holding onto your countertops without causing any damage. There’s also an adjustment screw, so you can ease up or buckle down on the pressure to suit each juicing session.

Centrifugal juicers are the fastest, most convenient type of juicer.
They’re best for people who mainly want to drink the old standbys like apples, carrots and beets, rather than greens or citrus.
They’re also our recommendation for people who will be juicing for multiple people at a time, like for the whole family or for a gathering.
They’re simply less stressful and time-intensive to use, since they don’t require much prep work or elbow grease. A centrifugal juicer can get your whole juicing session done in minutes.
We think they make great starter juicers for the average consumer. However, the oxidation and heat they can introduce into juice might be a concern for the purists out there.
Masticating juicers are more efficient than centrifugal juicers, and are still a lot more affordable than triturating models.
They produce higher yields than centrifugal juicers, and the resulting juice has a higher nutritional content.
However, they require prep work, careful technique, and elbow grease. They’re more time-intensive and labor-intensive than centrifugal models.
We recommend a masticating juicer for people who are more concerned with nutrition than convenience. They’re also a better choice for people who want to make a lot of green juices, or juices with a wider nutritional variety.
Triturating juicers are the best choice for people who want to juice lots of leafy greens, and are most concerned about efficiency.
They’ll give you the most bang for your buck over the long-term, since these juicers waste up to 50% less than centrifugal juicers. They’re also the only type of motorized juicer that’s really suited to juicing wheatgrass.
However, they take longer to clean than masticating juicers, and can cost twice as much.
Handheld juicers are our top recommendation to people who want to juice wheatgrass. Wheatgrass requires a juicer with a very tight setting and high pressure, which many motorized juicers can’t handle.
They’re also ideal for keeping around as a dedicated greens juicer, to supplement a motorized model. However, they’re not ideal for juicing larger amounts of produce.
How much should I spend on my first juicer?
The answer to this largely depends on the type of juicer you’ll be buying.
Centrifugal juicers are available from roughly $75 to $400. We recommend spending above the $150 mark for a model with multiple juicing settings, to give you added versatility with greens and citrus.
Masticating juicers cost between $200 and $400. The cheaper models will have lighter plastic, and be less durable in the long term.
The most expensive models are vertical masticating juicers, which cost more than $300. They’re the easiest to use, and have the slowest speeds.
However, they can be cost-prohibitive for some buyers. When it comes to triturating juicers, we’re only recommending the least expensive option (at around $500), as the higher-end models can cost upwards of $1,000.
As a general rule, we recommend that first-time juicers spend enough to buy a midrange juicer.
While these are more expensive than the baseline juicers, they’re more versatile, more durable, and more efficient than the budget models. The top of the line models are probably a bit much, unless you already know you’re going to be juicing for life.
One way to get the most bang for your buck is to look for long warranties. Masticating juicers in particular come with warranties of 10-15 years!
Another way to ease the cost is to find a juicer that can also double as food processor, grinder, or other kitchen appliance. Masticating and triturating juicers are your best bets for versatility around the kitchen.
What’s proper juicing technique?
Proper juicing technique isn’t rocket science. It’s about feeding produce into your juice in a way that minimizes the chance of clogs or jams, and helps the machine work to maximize the amount of juice you get!
Here are a few of our top tips:
The key to a smooth juicing session is to keep alternating textures. You want to follow soft, juicy fruits like citrus with something hard and fibrous, like carrots or beets. This helps keep everything moving through, just like fiber works in your digestive system.
-Take your time:
Even the quickest juicer can struggle sometimes. You want to make sure you’re giving the juicer time to work.
While you might need to push produce through, make sure you’re not fighting the juicer. Try wiggling the plunger, rather than ramming it in.
We also prefer juicers with reversing functions, as they help to clear clogs and jams.
-Do the right prep work:
Many centrifugal juicers advertise that you can throw whole apples in with no prep work.
We recommend taking the seeds out, at the very least. Apple seeds contain arsenic, which is definitely not something you want to be drinking with your morning juice!
Also, leaving citrus peels and rinds can throw off the taste of your juice. We think it’s worth the extra few minutes to do basic prep work, even with centrifugal juicers. However, you can certainly get away with larger, rougher hunks of fruits and vegetables.
Masticating and triturating juicers need a bit more prep. You’ll want to cut up fruits and vegetables into long, thin strips.
We also suggest pre-rolling your greens into scrolls before you feed them in. This helps the auger’s teeth, and it allows the juicer to use friction between the leaves to help itself.

Finishing each juicing session with a lemon is an easy way to take care of most of the cleaning work before you actually take the juicer apart.

Cleaning pulp screens can be tricky on any juicer, whether it’s the circular basket on a centrifugal juicer or the square screen on a masticating juicer.
